Timing Belt Replacement in Longview, WA

The timing belt is one of those parts most drivers never think about - until it breaks. And when it breaks, it can destroy an engine in an instant. If your vehicle has a timing belt and you’re not sure when it was last replaced, Art's Automotive in Longview, WA can check it out and take care of it before it becomes an emergency.

The timing belt connects your engine’s crankshaft to the camshaft, keeping the valves and pistons moving in precise synchronization. If that synchronization is off - even slightly - the engine runs poorly. If the belt snaps, the valves and pistons can collide, causing severe internal engine damage that’s often not worth repairing.

The timing belt is made of rubber and fiber, which means it wears and degrades over time regardless of how carefully you drive. Most manufacturers recommend replacing it every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, or roughly every 5 to 7 years - whichever comes first. The interval varies by vehicle, so checking your owner’s manual or asking us is the best way to know where you stand.

Not all vehicles have a timing belt. Many newer engines use a timing chain instead, which is made of metal and generally lasts the life of the engine. If you’re not sure which your vehicle has, we can tell you.

Timing Belt vs. Timing Chain

Timing Belt- Made of reinforced rubber, connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. Quiet, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive to produce, but has a limited service life and must be replaced on schedule. Found in many Japanese and European vehicles.

Timing Chain- Made of metal, similar to a bicycle chain. Generally lasts much longer than a rubber belt, but can stretch over time and develop noise or slack, especially if oil changes are neglected. When a timing chain starts to go, you’ll often hear a rattling sound from the front of the engine on startup.

When to Replace Your Timing Belt

The safest approach is to replace it at or before the manufacturer’s recommended interval. Don’t wait for symptoms - the timing belt rarely gives you a warning before it snaps.

That said, here are some signs that the belt or its related components may be due for service:

  • Ticking or slapping noise from the engine- Can indicate belt wear or slack.
  • Rough idle or misfires- Timing that’s slightly off can cause the engine to run unevenly.
  • Hard starting- A stretched or worn belt can affect compression and make starting difficult.
  • Check engine light with timing-related codes- Cam and crank sensor codes can sometimes point to timing issues.
  • Visible wear or cracking on the belt- If we can see the belt and it shows cracking, fraying, or missing teeth, it needs to come out now.

What’s Included in Our Timing Belt Service

Timing belt replacement is typically done as a kit, not just the belt alone, because the related components wear at the same rate and should be replaced at the same time:

  • Timing belt- The main component, replaced with a quality OEM-spec belt.
  • Timing belt tensioner- Keeps the belt at the correct tension. A failed tensioner is a common cause of belt failure.
  • Idler pulleys- Guide the belt’s path. Worn pulleys can cause the belt to slip or wear unevenly.
  • Water pump- On many engines, the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Since the labor to access it is already done during a belt replacement, we recommend replacing it at the same time to avoid having to do the job again in a few years.
  • Front seals- Cam and crank seals that are showing any leakage get replaced while everything is already apart.
